Parrots breed in response to environmental conditions, particularly during spring at the onset of the warmer months for most species where the food sources for the birds become abundant. During this time, the bodies of parrots release sex hormones that stimulates the urge of the birds to reproduce. This response to the change in the weather ensures that the birds, particularly the females have enough food while rearing their young.
Most species of parrots are monogamous, sticking with just one breeding partner for their entire lives. The breeding pair remain together even during the nonbreeding season. A courtship display is performed by the males for the females before such bond between the breeding pair is formed. These displays include the “stately walk,” the “parade,” and the “eye blaze.”
