Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo (Cacatua leadbeateri mollis, Cacatuidae: Cockatoos and Corellas) NT, Australia: [cockatoo birds]

A pair of Major Mitchell cockatoos visited our campsite, often shy, these birds were curious. Thinly distributed across inland Australia these birds were of the western subspecies (ssp. mollis) - as seen by the solid red in the birds crest. One of the pair is seen demolishing a termite nest in a branch of a tree, the other bird watches.

The eastern subspecies can be seen at: https://vimeo.com/136802565 and https://vimeo.com/118380156

Filmed at Newhaven sanctuary see australianwildlife.org./sanctuaries/newhaven-sanctuary.aspx
